How the Bitcoin Cash fork played out.
The August 2017 Bitcoin Cash fork is the closest analog. Not every exchange credited users at the snapshot, and the ones that didn’t took months to reverse course under user pressure.
Credited BCH to user accounts within hours of the fork. Kraken publicly committed five days in advance.
Publicly declined at fork. Coinbase reversed 5 months later. Bitstamp reversed after 2 months. Gemini did not credit users initially at all.
The IRS ruling: In 2021, the IRS confirmed that fork receipt is a taxable event at the moment of the fork under Section 61 of the Code — regardless of when the exchange credited the coins. Exchanges that delayed created a tax liability their users could not access.

Voting tells exchanges what their users want. Controlling your own keys avoids depending on an exchange’s crediting decision, but verified wallet software and replay protection still matter.
