How to split
BTC and ECX
Splitting separates your BTC and ECX so spending one does not also spend the other.
There’s no pre-claim form. You can leave shared coins untouched while you wait for a verified procedure. Exchanges may set their own access policies.
Where do you keep your coins?
Choose one to see the guidance that applies to you. This page explains the process; it does not connect to your wallet.
Start with your wallet or exchange above. You’ll only see the steps and references relevant to that setup.
Not sure which option fits?
If you approve transactions on a physical signing device, choose Hardware wallet—even if you also use an app. If an exchange processes withdrawals for you, choose Exchange account. Otherwise, choose your wallet app. Multisig and shared custody arrangements need instructions for that specific setup.
How splitting works
An ordinary transaction can be copied to both networks. This is called replay. Splitting prevents this for the spendable pieces of your balance—called outputs—that you include in the split. Changing the destination address alone does not do this.
- 01
Move ECX with protection
Using a verified wallet procedure, send the shared ECX outputs to an address you control with replay protection enabled.
- 02
Wait for confirmations
Check which outputs were included and follow the release’s confirmation guidance. A chain reorganisation can reverse a recent split.
- 03
Check both networks
Confirm the ECX transaction succeeded and the corresponding BTC remains unspent. You can then spend that BTC independently.
Questions about splitting
Does splitting convert or sell my BTC?
No. It separates spendable outputs across two ledgers. A correctly protected ECX transaction moves ECX only and pays an ECX network fee. BTC and ECX do not have an implied equal market value.
Must I register or split immediately?
There is no pre-claim form. You can leave coins untouched while you understand your setup. The important point is to avoid an unprotected spend of shared outputs. Custodians may have their own access policies.
I already moved BTC. What should I check?
Do not assume ECX remained at the old address. Inspect the transaction and resulting outputs on both chains: an ordinary BTC spend may have been replayed on ECX. If you need help, use official channels without sharing private keys.
Does a Beta split count for mainnet?
No. Each network starts from its own snapshot. A Beta rehearsal does not separate the later mainnet outputs. Alpha/Beta burn or redemption programmes are a different process.
How many confirmations are enough?
This guide does not assign a universal safe number. Use current release and operator guidance for the network and amount involved. A chain reorganisation that removes a split can undo the separation.
Is my entire wallet split after one transaction?
Only the outputs included in a successful split are covered. Other accounts, omitted outputs and later receipts may still be shared. A post-fork timestamp or block height alone does not prove separation.
04 / technical referenceReplay-protection requirements
In the reviewed ECX implementation, the exact value below bypasses the usual transaction locktime check. It does not bypass signatures, ownership or other transaction rules.
499999999below 0xffffffffInput sequences determine whether Bitcoin enforces locktime. Bitcoin reads this value as a far-future block height. At least one input must be non-final for Bitcoin to enforce it; if all inputs use 0xffffffff, locktime is ignored. Inspect every input in the final signed transaction.
The node test uses 0xfffffffe; the mobile implementation uses 0xfffffffd on every input. These are examples, not a prescription for every script or signer. Do not substitute 500000000: that is interpreted as a timestamp.
For operators: separate eligible ECX outputs first, account for confirmations and reorgs, verify each chain independently, and retain the marker on ECX withdrawals. An unmarked spend may still be replayable.
